Diabetes
and Depression are Related
By John Miller, Md
Anyone can develop depression, but people with diabetes may be at greater
risk in addition, individuals with depression may be at greater risk for
developing diabetes, depression may be difficult to identify, so it is
important ot discuss the issue if suspected. Treatment for depression
help people manage symptoms of both diseases, thus improving quality of
life.
Several studies suggest that diabetes doubles the risk
of depression compared to those without diabetes. The chances of becoming
depressed increase as diabetes complications worsen. Depression leads
to poorer physical and mental functioning, so a person is likely to follow
a required diet or medication plan for diabetes.
Treating depression with psychotherapy, medication, or
a combination of these treatments can improve a patient’s well-being
and ability to manage diabetes.
Depression is a serious medical condition that affects
thoughts, feelings, and the ability to function in everyday life. Depression
can occur at any age. People with diabetes, their families and friends,
and even their physicians may not distinguish the symptoms of depression.
The symptoms of depression include (1) decreased energy; (2) a sad or
anxious mood; (3) feelings of hopelessness, guilt, restlessness, and worthlessness;
(4) loss of faculty concentrating and remembering; (6) problems sleeping
or oversleeping; and (7) changes in appetite and weight. In Severe cases,
people with depression have thoughts of death or suicide and may even
attempt suicide.
The causes of depression are not well understood. Depression
may be triggered by stress, difficult life events, side effects of medications,
or other factors. Whatever its causes, depression can limit the energy
needed to keep focused on treatment for other disorders, such as diabetes.
Depression can be difficult to diagnose, especially if
patients don’t tell their doctors about their symptoms. If you think
that you or someone close to you may have depression, discuss this with
a doctor. Getting depression treated can help improve general health and
quality of life.
