Diabetes and Depression are Related

Anyone can develop depression, but people with diabetes may be at greater risk in addition, individuals with depression may be at greater risk for developing diabetes, depression may be difficult to identify, so it is important ot discuss the issue if suspected. Treatment for depression help people manage symptoms of both diseases, thus improving quality of life.

Several studies suggest that diabetes doubles the risk of depression compared to those without diabetes. The chances of becoming depressed increase as diabetes complications worsen. Depression leads to poorer physical and mental functioning, so a person is likely to follow a required diet or medication plan for diabetes.

Treating depression with psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of these treatments can improve a patient’s well-being and ability to manage diabetes.

Depression is a serious medical condition that affects thoughts, feelings, and the ability to function in everyday life. Depression can occur at any age. People with diabetes, their families and friends, and even their physicians may not distinguish the symptoms of depression. The symptoms of depression include (1) decreased energy; (2) a sad or anxious mood; (3) feelings of hopelessness, guilt, restlessness, and worthlessness; (4) loss of faculty concentrating and remembering; (6) problems sleeping or oversleeping; and (7) changes in appetite and weight. In Severe cases, people with depression have thoughts of death or suicide and may even attempt suicide.

The causes of depression are not well understood. Depression may be triggered by stress, difficult life events, side effects of medications, or other factors. Whatever its causes, depression can limit the energy needed to keep focused on treatment for other disorders, such as diabetes.

Depression can be difficult to diagnose, especially if patients don’t tell their doctors about their symptoms. If you think that you or someone close to you may have depression, discuss this with a doctor. Getting depression treated can help improve general health and quality of life.
